My First Marilyn

I have a pretty horrible confession to make. I’ve never seen a Marilyn Monroe film before this evening.

Oh yes, before you go crazy I should admit that I (like so many other females) adore her. Love the quotes, love the curves, love her story, love her. But never really felt the overwhelming desire to watch her in action. Strikes me as funny now. Why wouldn’t I?

It’s really all NBC’s fault. I’ve been watching Smash, one of their new shows that revolves around a pretty impressive cast of characters. They all live in New York City and work on Broadway. The topic of their newest play? You guessed it. Marilyn. It’s suprisingly good. I really watch for Debra Messing, but am consistently surprised by Katherine McPhee.

Shelton is (unfortunately) on-call this weekend. On-calls are something I might explain or I may never explain. Either way, he did in fact get called and I was left to my own devices. As soon as the door shut, I looked at what else was on Netflix besides Billy the Exterminator. “Classic” movies drew me in, and when I saw The Seven Year Itch, I knew it was meant to be. I went straight into Girl Mode. I had packed OPI’s La Paz-itively Hot (the perfect pink shade) yesterday with every intention to do my nails and here was my chance. I just relish moments like these.

And this movie, oh my goodness, this movie. I am always happily surprised when I really love old movies. Always shocked when I’m actually entertained.

Here’s what I think so far:

  • Tom Ewell’s character seriously reminds me of Matthew Broderick’s Ferris Bueller. Wildly imaginative and descriptive for the audience.
  • I wish I saw more men wearing grey suits. One word: dapper.
  • I wonder if the idea of a seven year itch is true?
  • I also wonder how often Marilyn acted and how often she was just… Marilyn. It’s obvious she uses her sex appeal smartly–there’s nothing ditzy about that blonde.
  • I am curious as to how the movie will end. Will he give in to Marilyn’s devices or stay true to his Stepford Wife?

Speaking of devices, I’m going to get back to mine. These nails need their top coat. Paz-itively.

Sarah
